Karachi witnessed another spell of rain on Wednesday afternoon, compounding the misery of residents already struggling with flooded roads and power outages from Tuesday’s downpour. The death toll from rain-related incidents has now climbed to eight, while the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of more heavy showers in the coming days across Sindh and Balochistan.
Several key arteries, including Shaheed-i-Millat Road, Nazimabad underpasses, Tariq Road underpass, and Korangi Crossing, remained closed due to urban flooding. Karachi Traffic Police urged commuters to seek alternate routes, while Mayor Murtaza Wahab advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and reminded them that “climate change is a reality” impacting the city.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah visited flood-hit areas, claiming that municipal teams were working round the clock with 26 de-watering pumps deployed across the city. However, many citizens continued to face hours-long blackouts, internet disruptions, and traffic chaos.
Rescue workers recovered the body of a 50-year-old man swept away in a nullah near Gurumandir, while a 19-year-old motorcyclist died of electrocution in DHA Phase 5. Earlier, six others had died in incidents of building collapse, house wall caving, and electrocution across Karachi.
The PMD forecast more torrential rains in Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, and Tharparkar, as well as parts of Balochistan, with warnings of urban flooding in low-lying areas.
