AI threatens jobs in Pakistan’s IT sector as companies shift to multi-skilled talent

KARACHI: Artificial Intelligence is beginning to replace jobs in Pakistan’s IT sector, mirroring global trends where automation is transforming the workforce. Despite the industry’s steady growth, employment opportunities are shrinking as companies adopt AI-powered tools to perform tasks that once required entire teams, according to the P@SHA Skills Survey 2025.

In the past year, the local IT industry hired nearly 34,600 professionals, including 32,685 technical experts and 1,969 non-technical staff. But as AI-driven systems become more efficient, firms are increasingly hiring fewer but more versatile employees capable of coding, problem-solving, and AI integration.

The survey highlights that demand is rising for mid-to-senior level Fullstack JavaScript, .NET, and Python developers, with .NET emerging as the most in-demand skill. For mobile app development, React Native and Flutter dominate, especially among entry-level roles.

Cloud computing expertise remains crucial, with AWS Developer Certifications leading at beginner levels, while Azure, DevOps tools, and Kubernetes are gaining popularity for senior roles. On the testing side, ISTQB, Selenium, and Cypress remain staples. Meanwhile, Game Development, UI/UX, and Blockchain are also seeing steady growth, with Ethereum leading smart contract development.

The study, based on data from 256 companies, provides insights into Pakistan’s evolving IT workforce. Senior Vice Chairman of PASHA, Muhammad Umair Nizam, noted that continuous training and upskilling are vital for the industry’s growth. He stressed that while AI adoption poses challenges, it also creates opportunities to prepare youth for cutting-edge technologies and global job markets.
