ISLAMABAD: The government is considering the import of raw sugar to address rising prices and meet the longstanding demand of sugar millers for year-round operations.
A high-level meeting, chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, discussed the feasibility of raw sugar imports. Ministers Ali Pervaiz Malik and Haroon Akhtar, along with senior officials, attended the session.
Officials reviewed international models and were directed to conduct a study on the economic impact of imports. The government aims to stabilize prices and ensure public relief amid soaring costs ahead of Ramadan.
Sugar prices have surged from Rs. 140 to Rs. 190 per kg, with forecasts of reaching Rs. 240. Critics blame last year’s controversial export of 450,000 metric tons, allegedly influenced by politically backed sugar barons, for the current crisis.
With inflation rising, the government’s move to import sugar may provide temporary relief, but concerns remain over who will ultimately benefit from the policy.
