Bangladesh calls for direct flights, shipping services with Pakistan to boost trade

Chittagong/Dhaka: Bangladeshi businessmen have urged the resumption of direct flights and frequent shipping services with Pakistan, saying the move could unlock new opportunities in trade, investment, and logistics.

The proposals came during Pakistan’s Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan’s one-day visit to Chittagong, where he met Bangladesh’s Adviser for Commerce Bashiruddin and representatives of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

During the meetings, business leaders called for digitisation of trade systems and closer cooperation in garments, agriculture, and logistics. They stressed that direct air and sea links are vital to cut costs, reduce delays, and improve market access for both countries.

Minister Khan and Adviser Bashiruddin told participants that a Pakistan-Bangladesh Joint Working Group on Trade will be established soon to provide a structured platform for dialogue. They also invited Bangladeshi businesses to the 3rd International Food and Agricultural Exhibition in Karachi, scheduled for November 25–27, 2025.

Discussions also touched on trilateral cooperation for exporting goods to Africa and Central Asia, with a particular focus on healthcare, leather, food supplies, and essential commodities. Both sides agreed to work on a comprehensive Pakistan-Bangladesh Trade and Investment Roadmap.

The delegation visited Chittagong Port and Kabir Ship Recycling Facilities, where officials discussed collaboration in shipbreaking, shipbuilding, and recycling. The Chittagong Port Authority chairman gave a detailed presentation on the port’s history, infrastructure, and ongoing projects.
